How to use Compress Image
- Add your images. Drag in JPG, PNG or WebP images, as many as you like.
- Choose the settings. The defaults work well. Lower the quality or maximum size for smaller files.
- Compress and download. See how much you saved, then download your images.
How image compression works
- JPG and WebP are re-saved at a quality level you choose. 75% usually looks identical to the original and is far smaller.
- PNG is shrunk by reducing the number of colours to 256 or fewer, with smoothing to hide banding, the same technique popular PNG optimisers use. Transparency is kept.
- Oversized photos are scaled down. A 6000-pixel phone photo shown on a website is rarely displayed wider than 2000 pixels.
If a file can't be made smaller, the original is kept, so you never get a bigger file back.
Images for websites
Large images are one of the most common causes of slow pages. Aim for under 200 KB for most images and under 500 KB for full-width hero images. Saving as WebP usually gives the smallest files. See also Resize Image.
Private by design
Your images are processed entirely in your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded to PDFWisely, so there's nothing for us to store, view or delete.
Frequently asked questions
Will compressing reduce quality?
Slightly, but at the default settings the difference is very hard to see. You can raise the quality setting if you need to.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression happens in your browser.
Why didn't my image get smaller?
It was already well optimised. In that case we keep your original file.
Can I compress a PDF?
Yes, with Compress PDF.
